Convert an image to an embroidery file

Almost every embroidery program has a button that turns an image into stitches. It exists, it works for very little, and it is behind most files that pucker and skip.

What auto-conversion does

It looks at the colors of the image and fills each area with stitches. It does not know what is an outline, a background or a letter, or in which order to stitch. The Embird tutorial itself warns that converting an image to stitches is not automatic digitizing and does not replace real digitizing.

Where it goes wrong

Stitch order with too many jumps and trims, the same density for everything (which puckers the fabric), small letters that turn into a blur and jagged outlines. A logo, with text and borders, shows all of it at once.

When auto works

For a simple one-color effect, at a large size, on a stable fabric. For a client logo, a name or anything you will sell, it does not.

What works

Digitizing by hand: each area with the right stitch type, underlay, a planned stitch order and a defined size. That is what KYVO does: you send the image, the size and the fabric, and receive the file in your machine format.
